On May 19th, EvCC’s Board of Trustees voted for adding Walt Price’s name to the Student Fitness Center. The center is now known as the Walt Price Student Fitness Center.
EvCC’s Vice President of College Advancement, John Olson, describes in an email:
Walt Price was perhaps the most influential coach and athletic director Snohomish County has ever seen. He began work here in 1948 and retired in 1970. He coached football, basketball, baseball, and golf; he was the athletic director and led the physical education department as well.
When Walt Price was inducted into EvCC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009, we learned about the significant influence he had. He worked with the legendary Jim Ennis, and he mentored numerous high school and college coaches, including Jim Livengood, Mike Price, Dennis Erickson, Ed Pepple, Paul Blowers, Paul Wallroff, Jerry Parrish, and Jim Linden.
Naming a building after an individual has been done twice on campus – you see the names Gary Parks & John Terrey on one building and the name Henry M. Jackson on another. Nearly all of the other college buildings are named after the mountain peaks that surround the region, and that will continue to be the preferred option for new construction. We also have the Russell Day Gallery, named after a former faculty member whose influence was also significant.
Our naming policy allows for naming in honor of a person who, “(w)hile serving the College in an important administrative capacity, … has rendered distinguished service that warrants recognition of the individual’s exceptional contributions to the welfare of the College.”
